Residents Start Second Recall of Mahwah Mayor
MAHWAH, New Jersey, January 18, 2018 โ The Committee to Recall Mayor William Laforet, a group of Mahwah voters who want the Mahwah mayor removed from office, has completed the first steps in petitioning for the mayor's removal.
Vincent Maiello, Chair of the Recall Committee said, "Our committee represents a large group of Mahwah residents that believe Mayor William Laforet should not be allowed to remain in office. We are confident that this recall effort will succeed."
On January 8, the Recall Committee submitted their "letter of intent to circulate a recall petition" to the township clerk. The clerk certified and approved the letter on January 9 and Mayor Laforet was served with the letter of intent on January 11. The next step in the recall process is for the committee is to submit their petition for approval. Once the petition is approved, they can begin collecting signatures.
To successfully recall the mayor, the Recall Committee will need to collect 4,150 signatures, representing 25% of the registered voters in Mahwah, in a period of 160 days.
In 2015, a previous attempt to recall Laforet was made but, due to public fear of retaliation and a compressed timeline, they were not successful. Chair of the previous campaign, Dr. Annette Freund, said, "I am glad these residents are continuing the work we started."
